The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Baghdad discussed a thesis (Signatures literature until the end of the Abbasid era A study in the light of social linguistics) by the student Osama Mahmoud Jassim from the Department of Arabic Language. The viva was held at Ahl Al-Bayt Hall.
The importance of the research lies in the fact that the Signatures are a journey of blogging or what is known as notational writing. It passed through several stages in the ancient prosperous eras, until it reached its zenith in the Abbasid period. It aims to influence the recipient in order to change his behaviour or convince him.
The thesis comes out with a set of findings and recommendations, including Signatures that represent an important link in artistic prose, and were closely linked to societal issues that contributed to addressing state affairs in several aspects, including political, religious, social, and military. The literature of Signatures provides an applied sociological approach, as a linguistic communication material that allows studying the relationship between language and society, which means studying the linguistic reality in its types and forms. The Arabic Signatures show the characteristics of the Arab society, its customs and traditions, and the corresponding values and behaviours.
The researcher recommends taking Arabic Signatures as a field of academic and critical studies, due to their aesthetics which contain in their semantics.
The thesis was approved with (Eligible) estimation by the discussion committee consisting of Dr. Ali Helou as Chairman, Dr. Ammar Nima and Dr. Bilal Najm as members and Dr. Nima Dahish as a member and supervisor.
To closely follow the scientific atmosphere, the viva was attended by Dr. Arkan Rahim Jabr, the assistant dean for administrative affairs.
