The College of Islamic Sciences Discusses the Views of Kufan Scholars in Arabic Lexicography: A Morphosyntactic Study

The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Baghdad discussed the dissertation titled “The Views of Kufan Scholars in Arabic Lexicography: A Morphosyntactic Study” by Haitham Jumaa Sabr from the Department of Arabic Language, presented in the Scholars’ Hall.

The significance of this study lies in the fundamental role of Arabic lexicons as essential tools for preserving and teaching the language. These lexicons contribute to safeguarding Arab culture and heritage by documenting words and meanings while also enhancing learners’ ability to comprehend and use the language correctly.

This study aims to compile the morphosyntactic views of Kufan scholars as documented in classical and modern Arabic lexicons. Additionally, it seeks to highlight the significance of the recognized grammatical principles upheld by leading Kufan linguists and to shed light on the unique opinions they advocated, particularly those that diverged from the mainstream linguistic tradition, most notably the Basran school.

The study yielded several findings and recommendations, the most significant of which include:

The research established that Arabic lexicons represent a monumental repository of Arabic linguistic heritage and serve as a crucial source for linguistic studies. These lexicons encompass the views of various grammatical schools, both classical and modern, highlighting their similarities and differences.
The findings confirm that Kufan scholars had a profound influence on the development of Arabic linguistic thought, both historically and in contemporary studies. Their contributions were particularly notable in the field of morphology, where they played a pioneering role.
The dissertation was approved with a “Meets Requirements” grade by the examination committee, which consisted of Professor Dr. Salman Abbas (Chair), Dr. Ali Asad, Dr. Safaa Tawfiq, Dr. Ahmed Khaled, and Dr. Marwa Ali (Members), with Dr. Basim Mohammed Hussein serving as a member and supervisor.
The discussion session was attended by Professor Dr. Ne’ma Dahesh Farhan and his administrative assistant, Professor Dr. Arkan Raheem Jabr, who closely monitored the academic proceedings.
